ATELJÉ VITA DUKEN, UMEÅ
Our lighting scheme for Ateljé Vita Duken combines architectural and decorative details, elevating the seasonal fine-dining experience and creating a warm, intimate interior. Located in a former fire station and pump house, the restaurant by renowned chef Mathias Dahlgren completes the transformation of Tornhuset (the Tower House).
A key element of the lighting scheme is the ceiling design that we developed. It's a deliberate expression of the grid structure, with concealed track and precisely placed spotlights that accentuate the crisp white tablecloths below (Vita Duken means white cloth). Wanting to celebrate the building's industrial past, we offset the dropped ceiling from the exposed brick walls, using a concealed wash of warm light to reveal the rough texture of the mortar while softening its imperfections.
Decorative lighting ties the space together. Slim, minimalist fixtures hang above the front-of-house countertop, creating a moment of theatre as dishes receive their finishing touches. In the lounge areas, layered decorative lighting – including feature pendants – creates a soft, cosy glow that invites guests to settle in with a drink. Integrated joinery illumination picks out key features throughout, including the all-important wine cabinet.
The overall outcome is a space that feels really special, and a local restaurant that has already won national awards, including 'Destination of the Year' 2025 by DI Weekend and 'New Opening of the Year Sweden' 2026 by Falstaff.
